Behind the Craft: The Unstacked Lead Vocal

I originally planned a full harmony arrangement for "But If You Stay." But once the room noise, the scraping chair, and the closing door were tracked, the perspective shifted.

The lyrics play out like a scene in a stage play. I wanted you to feel as if you’re sitting right across the table from me while I talk to you. Bringing in a choir of stacked harmonies would have broken that illusion—suddenly creating five copies of me in a room meant for an intimate, one-on-one conversation.

In this song, in this moment, and in this emotional state... it had to be just one voice.
